Dandy Don gives his two cents

A wonderful article about the recent dumping of the Polka Grammy.

No 'One Last Dance'? Grammy Kills 'Polka' Category
By Crabby GolightlyIT'S AN AFFRONT TO POLKA LOVERS!

A sad day for Polka Music

Please don't let the Polka Die!!

The Recording Academy will reduce by one the number of Grammys handed
out in January.

The polka album nod has been eliminated. In addition, the Recording
Academy split contemporary folk/Americana into two categories,
contemporary folk album and Americana album, while Latin urban album
will merge with Latin rock or alternative into a Latin rock,
alternative or urban album category.

When all is said and done, the total number of gold-plated trophies to
be handed out Jan. 31 will be 109.

Meanwhile, at the Recording Acad's annual spring trustees confab,
musicvid director-producer George Flanigen was elected chair of the
board of trustees, music supervisor-composer-film music exec Doug
Frank was elected vice chair, and engineer-producer Glenn Lorbecki was
elected secretary-treasurer. Previous chairman of the board Jimmy Jam
takes on the title chair emeritus.

We’ll be the polka meat in a very tasty musical sandwich!  Specifically, we’ll be on after the super stylish Bombbone and before the incredible Sex With No Hands from San Francisco.  This is one helluva line-up and sure to be an amazingly entertaining night!

Sex With No Hands, The Polkaholics, The Squeezettes
8pm $7

When a band's name is SEX WITH NO HANDS, you know they mean business. These pioneers of accordion-funk merge Rock, R&B, and Polka into a high-energy dance party of original songs and crowd favorites.

SEX WITH NO HANDS features two electric accordions and a vintage 80s keytar. Every member of the seven-piece band sings and doubles on horns; and both analog and digital synthesizers speak to the crowd through three harmonized talk-boxes. Playing a wide range of genres, SEX WITH NO HANDS performances can last all night. Audiences love the group's stage antics, outlandish costumes, and choreographed laser light show.

Polka_01

They said it couldn't be done, but since 1997 The Polkaholics have been mixing doses of punk rock and polka in a high-speed blender, creating a souped-up sound that fuses the beergarden with the mosh pit. As noted in the Chicago Sun-Times, "The Polkaholics wreak havoc to both traditional polka and rock music!" As evidence of their ability to break down musical barriers, The Polkaholics have performed in some of the most prestigious Chicago music venues including the Metro, House of Blues, the Vic, the Chicago Symphony Center, the Chicago Cultural Center, and of course the Baby Doll Polka Club. And they have even been featured internationally on the incredible "American Polka" CD released on the Trikont label out of Munich Germany. With founder Dandy Don Hedeker on guitar and vocals, Jolly James Wallace on bass and vocals, and Stylin' Steve Glover on drums and vocals, The Polkaholics use a power rock trio format to put the umph into the oompah-POW, blasting polka screaming into the 21st century.

The Squeezettes

"Milwaukee's only all female accordion group" - Sarah (aka Ms. Bubbles Galore!),
Linda (Miz...Tiny Bubbles) and Pamela (aka Ms. Big Surprise!) are the gals on the squeezebox. Sarah runs the lead vocal front of the bunch, with the gals doing some swinging background - Meoooooowww, Meoooooows etc.

Very nice review of our last show

Thanks to Paul Dailing for including us in his project to spend this spring and summer going to as many concerts as he can. We were the first and he was nice enough to write a great review on his blog.

My favorite line of the review: "They have so much fun doing what they do that it's easy to forget that what they do is reeeeeeally hard."

Thanks Paul!!
